The County of San Mateo received funding from the California
Coastal Conservancy for a feasibility study to evaluate the
re-opening of Werder Pier. This study will include an evaluation
of the existing conditions, solicitation of community input, development
of design alternatives, identification of potential funding sources,
and a summarization of these findings. This planning process has
begun and we need your input!
Werder Pier is located parallel to the west end of the San Mateo
Bridge. The Pier is the remnant of the old San Mateo-Hayward
Bridge that opened in 1929. The County of San Mateo bought the Pier
from the State in 1969.
|
A 25-year agreement with the State Wildlife
Conservation Board to operate the Pier as a public fishing pier expired
in 1995. Subsequently, the Pier was closed to the public to allow it to
used as and equipment staging area for the San Mateo bridge seismic retrofit.
The Pier has been closed to the public since, due to safety concerns
associated with the deterioration of the structure.

The County of San Mateo wants your input by October 17, 2003!
